The story
Afraido has the kindest heart in Goop World, but he's afraid of almost everything, so he carries a headlamp and his teddy bear, Alfred. On a freezing morning his fear grows so big that a swirl of icy air carries him off.
He thaws out on a riverbank in Ecuador and meets Loki, a playful young alpaca. Loki warns him about the Devil's Cauldron, a famous waterfall that seems to come looking for scared visitors.
The real place: Pailon del Diablo
Three things to tell your kid after the story.
- 1Pailon del Diablo is a powerful waterfall on the Pastaza River near the town of Banos, Ecuador.
- 2Its name means "Devil's Cauldron," and some people say they can see a devil's face in the rocks beside it.
- 3Visitors cross swinging bridges and squeeze along narrow rock paths to stand right beside the roaring water.
