The story
Selphina always thinks of herself first and dreams of wearing a crown. After hearing about the Crown Jewels in class, she rips the crown pictures from two history books and holds one to her head.
She pops into a rowboat at Traitor's Gate, at the Tower of London long ago. A raven named Brainard warns her that the Barbary lions of the royal zoo are on the loose.
The real place: Tower of London
Three things to tell your kid after the story.
- 1The Crown Jewels, including real crowns worn by kings and queens, are kept at the Tower of London.
- 2Ravens have lived at the Tower for centuries, and legend says the kingdom will fall if they ever leave.
- 3The Tower once had a royal zoo with lions and even a polar bear that was allowed to fish in the River Thames.
