The story
Badmoodia's mood ring shows everyone how she feels, and it can flip from happy purple to angry black in a blink. During one grumpy game of Candyland, she turns into a red gumdrop and vanishes.
She lands on a mountainside of orange hot spring pools in Iran, where a butterfly named Kelebek warns her that a squishy gumdrop like her could harden into rock.
The real place: Badab-e Surt
Three things to tell your kid after the story.
- 1Badab-e Surt is a staircase of colorful pools on a mountainside in northern Iran.
- 2Two mineral springs built the terraces. As the water flows down and cools, it leaves minerals behind that slowly harden into rock.
- 3The bright orange and red colors come from iron in the water, which is a bit like rust.
