The story
Bragger can turn a rainy day into a party, but he brags about everything, even an origami elephant that looks nothing like one. When he insists his is the best, Dilly Dally's paper elephant comes alive and gobbles him up.
He lands in a tiny room inside the Thorne Miniature Rooms at the Art Institute of Chicago, where giant human faces peer through the glass. A little girl wants him as a pet, and a security guard is closing in.
The real place: Thorne Miniature Rooms
Three things to tell your kid after the story.
- 1The Thorne Miniature Rooms were made in the 1930s and 1940s, designed by Narcissa Niblack Thorne with skilled craftspeople.
- 2They are built so one inch equals one foot, so everything, from tiny books to chandeliers, is one twelfth of real size.
- 3The Art Institute of Chicago shows 68 of the rooms, each one a peek into a European or American home from long ago.
