The story

Colorina colors everything she sees, and her big sister Chemistria loves experiments. On a rainy day Colorina and Sketcher draw a brick tunnel on her chalkboard wall, and when Colorina adds a tiny door, the sisters walk right through it.

The tunnel leads inside a giant twisting redwood tree in New Zealand, full of forest animals frozen in time by trolls. Holding hands, the sisters discover their colors can wake them up, just as Knotty the troll comes looking.

The real place: Redwood Forest, New Zealand

Three things to tell your kid after the story.

  1. 1New Zealand has a famous redwood forest in Rotorua, planted more than 100 years ago with trees from California.
  2. 2Coast redwoods are the tallest trees on Earth, and the tallest ones in California are over 100 meters high.
  3. 3The only land mammals native to New Zealand are bats. Most other mammals there were brought by people.
