The story
Distrusta trusts no one except her doll Tulla. When she refuses to believe Giggler found the missing piece of their pirate treasure puzzle, she reaches across it and the treasure chest pulls her inside.
She climbs out of a chest of gold in a Louisiana swamp, where Tulla can suddenly talk, and an alligator named Pierre warns her about carrying the sceptre of the pirate Jean Lafitte.
The real place: Barataria Swamp
Three things to tell your kid after the story.
- 1Jean Lafitte was a real pirate and smuggler who hid out in the swamps around Barataria Bay, near New Orleans, about 200 years ago.
- 2Lafitte and his men helped the Americans win the Battle of New Orleans in 1815.
- 3Today the Barataria swamp is part of a national park named after Lafitte, and alligators live there.
