The story

Hatesope is a happy Goop who hates soap so much he throws tantrums at bath time. When he whacks a stack of soap bars with his bat, one grows huge and swallows him up.

He slides out into the Nile River in Egypt, where a hippo named Hambert loves his bubbles. To get home he needs a drop of water from a camel's tongue at sunset, and the crocodiles are watching.

The real place: The Nile

Three things to tell your kid after the story.

  1. 1The Nile is one of the longest rivers in the world, and it flows from south to north into the Mediterranean Sea.
  2. 2Ancient Egyptians grew their food along the Nile because its yearly floods left behind rich, dark mud.
  3. 3Hippos cannot really swim. They walk or bounce along the river bottom and pop up to breathe.
