The story

Yellkum yells everything, even "It's raining today." At Tingull Falls, where the water changes color with sound, he tries to outshout Shoutine until the falls burst into flames and he dives in.

He comes up under an iceberg, where a baby beluga named Blanche knows a secret way in. Inside is the Land of the Midnight Sun, ruled by a snow queen who hates noise.

The real place: The Arctic

Three things to tell your kid after the story.

  1. 1In the far north, the summer sun stays up all night for weeks, which is why it is called the Land of the Midnight Sun.
  2. 2Beluga whales are white and make so many whistles and clicks that sailors called them "canaries of the sea."
  3. 3Most of an iceberg is hidden underwater. Only a small tip shows above the surface.
