The story
Twins Hugalina and Kissalina hug and kiss everything, from lampposts to classroom plants, whether anyone wants it or not. When they find a glowing pink rock at the edge of the meadow, they give it a big hug and a kiss, and it pulls them inside.
They splash down in a bubblegum pink lake in Senegal, so salty they can't sink. Salt harvesters work the shallows and pink pelicans line the shore, until Hugalina tries to hug one and something knocks over a harvester's basket.
The real place: Pink Lake (Lake Retba)
Three things to tell your kid after the story.
- 1Lake Retba in Senegal gets its pink color from a tiny salt-loving alga that lives in the water.
- 2The lake is so salty that people float in it easily, just like Hugalina and Kissalina.
- 3Salt harvesters rub shea butter on their skin to protect it from the strong salt while they work.
