The story

Jardad makes a racket everywhere he goes with his hammer and tool apron. After being sent home from school, he and Badinskool sneak into the closed zoo and wake the animals on their day off.

A grumpy orangutan flings him across the sky to Laos. A tiger who wishes he were scarier tells Jardad he must cross the country quietly and climb into a giant jar at the Plain of Jars.

The real place: Plain of Jars

Three things to tell your kid after the story.

  1. 1The Plain of Jars in Laos has thousands of giant stone jars, and some are taller than a grown-up.
  2. 2The jars are very old, and scientists think people may have used them for burials long ago.
  3. 3A local legend says a giant king made the jars to brew a huge celebration drink after winning a battle.
