The story
Krysoe is kind and generous, but when he doesn't get his way he can cry for a whole day. Sent outside for crying over raspberry syrup, he laughs at Annoya so hard that his tears turn into a river that carries him off.
He floats down the Enchanted River of the Philippines, where a big-eyed tarsier named Isko warns him about glowing spirits called Diwatas and the faraway Chocolate Hills.
The real place: Chocolate Hills
Three things to tell your kid after the story.
- 1The Chocolate Hills are more than a thousand rounded hills on the island of Bohol in the Philippines.
- 2They are covered in grass that turns brown in the dry season, so they look like chocolate drops.
- 3Tarsiers, tiny animals with huge eyes, live on Bohol too. Each eye is about as big as their whole brain.
