The story

Mefirsty always has to be first, and he carries a pole vaulting stick to leap to the front of every line. When a long queue forms for brand-new Goopers candy, he vaults right over it and slides into a barrel of candy peanuts.

He tumbles out inside the Chocolarium in Switzerland, surrounded by towers of chocolate. A grumpy chipmunk in a display tube warns him that stern Frau Schmid may want to turn him into a chocolate mold.

The real place: Switzerland

Three things to tell your kid after the story.

  1. 1Milk chocolate was invented in Switzerland in the 1870s, when a chocolate maker named Daniel Peter mixed chocolate with milk.
  2. 2The Swiss eat more chocolate per person than almost anyone else in the world.
  3. 3The Chocolarium is a real chocolate factory in Switzerland where visitors can watch how chocolate is made, just like Mefirsty.
