The story

Neverlissen lives in a world of knights, castles and foxes inside his own head, so he rarely hears a word anyone says. He misses the plan to meet the twins on the north side of the woods, heads south instead, and falls through the leaves into a dark hole.

He lands on a green island in Scotland, where his fox hat, Madra Rua, suddenly starts to talk. Madra Rua says they are on Islay and points toward Soldier's Rock, which guards the island from the sea.

The real place: Islay

Three things to tell your kid after the story.

  1. 1Islay is an island off the west coast of Scotland, and it is often called the "Queen of the Hebrides."
  2. 2Its name is said "EYE-la," and some people there still speak Scottish Gaelic, the language Madra Rua's name comes from.
  3. 3Every winter, huge flocks of barnacle geese fly all the way from Greenland to spend the winter on Islay.
