The story

Rhyma rhymes all the time, about everything. When she and her friends climb a hill to test the wind with a kite and find no wind at all, she sings a rhyme to call it back, and it carries her away.

The wind drops her on a bright yellow archway in Guatemala, where three kind siblings save her from a bully and invite her to help paint a giant kite for the famous festival in Sumpango.

The real place: Sumpango

Three things to tell your kid after the story.

  1. 1Every November 1, the town of Sumpango in Guatemala holds a festival of giant kites, called barriletes gigantes.
  2. 2The kites are made of colorful tissue paper and bamboo, and some are taller than a house.
  3. 3Families fly them to remember loved ones who have died, and many believe the kites carry messages up to them.
