The story

Sassilass is sweet and charming until something sassy slips out. At holiday tea she teases Obaynotte's hat ribbon, then gulps a mug of hot chocolate full of salt and crumbles away.

She wakes in a salt mine deep under Transylvania in Romania. A cheeky rat named Picante shows her around, but her salty words keep stirring up Sare the Salt Shadow.

The real place: Salina Turda

Three things to tell your kid after the story.

  1. 1Salina Turda is an old salt mine in Romania that now has an underground Ferris wheel and little boats on a salty lake.
  2. 2People dug salt out of this mine for hundreds of years, starting in the Middle Ages.
  3. 3Salt stalactites hang from the mine's ceilings like icicles, just like in the story.
