The story

Sir Ratsalot is a dapper little Goop with a bowler hat and cane who loves to tattle on everyone. When he heads off to tell on Messalina, a tree branch reaches out of her painted playroom wall and pulls him inside.

He tumbles into Germany's Black Forest, where a friendly badger named Dax warns him about a nasty cuckoo clockmaker and the sneaky polecats who work for him.

The real place: Black Forest

Three things to tell your kid after the story.

  1. 1The Black Forest in Germany is famous for cuckoo clocks, which people there have been carving by hand for hundreds of years.
  2. 2It is called the Black Forest because its fir and pine trees grow so thick that the forest looks dark.
  3. 3Black Forest cake, made with chocolate, cherries and whipped cream, is named after this part of Germany.
