The story
Compeeta turns everything into a contest, Remindo writes everything down, and Stareoffintospacer is always daydreaming. When Compeeta challenges them to leap over a flooded sinkhole, Stareoffintospacer spaces out mid-jump and all three tumble in.
They wash up in Cherrapunji, India, among bridges made of twisting, living roots. A damselfly named Tavleen warns that the roots are alive, but Compeeta is determined to cross faster than anyone.
The real place: Living Root Bridges
Three things to tell your kid after the story.
- 1The Khasi people of northeast India grow bridges by guiding the roots of rubber fig trees across rivers.
- 2A root bridge can take 10 to 15 years before it's strong enough to walk on, and it keeps getting stronger as it grows.
- 3Cherrapunji is one of the rainiest places on Earth, so its rivers rush and the strong bridges are really needed.
