The story

Urapyg is the neatest Goop in town, but when he is cross he calls everyone a pig. Chased by angry bees, he races into a magic summer gazebo and wishes he were somewhere wintry.

He lands in the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia. A nesting doll named Maya tries to hide him from the golden Imperial Eagle, but only if he stops calling names.

The real place: Winter Palace

Three things to tell your kid after the story.

  1. 1The Winter Palace was once home to the Russian tsars, and today it is part of the Hermitage, one of the biggest museums in the world.
  2. 2The palace is said to have 1,786 doors, just like Maya says in the story.
  3. 3Real cats have lived at the Hermitage for hundreds of years to keep mice away from the art.
