The story

Twins Usem and Wastem carry bags everywhere, one full of useful things and one full of wasted ones. When they spy a human boy in Googlina's kitchen, they grab him and vanish in a cloud of blue fairy dust.

They pop up in the middle of the Pacific Ocean beside a floating island of trash, where a voice calls for help from inside a tangled old fishing net.

The real place: Great Pacific Garbage Patch

Three things to tell your kid after the story.

  1. 1The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a huge area of the ocean between Hawaii and California where swirling currents collect floating trash.
  2. 2Most of it is not a solid island. It is tiny bits of plastic, like confetti, spread through the water.
  3. 3Sea turtles can mistake floating plastic bags for jellyfish, one of their favorite foods.
