The story

Carolesse is sweet and charming but very careless, always leaving her doll and bonnets behind. When she and Elostum finally find a secret keyhole in an ivy-covered wall, she discovers she has left the keys behind, presses her eye to the keyhole, and vanishes.

She bubbles up in the sea off Egypt, where a little red fish named Ata shows her Cleopatra's sunken palace, full of stone statues, ancient secrets and a sneaky angel shark.

The real place: Alexandria, Egypt

Three things to tell your kid after the story.

  1. 1Cleopatra was a queen of Egypt more than two thousand years ago, and she ruled from the city of Alexandria by the sea.
  2. 2Earthquakes and giant waves long ago sank parts of ancient Alexandria, including royal palaces, under the water of the harbor.
  3. 3Divers have found sunken statues of sphinxes, columns and other treasures from Cleopatra's time on the seafloor.
