The story
Yuwanda is a kind, queenly Goop who wanders off without telling anyone, pulling her toy horse Maximillian behind her. Sneaking out to see the fairies release their lanterns, she grabs one and floats away into the night sky.
She lands on soft Sahara sand in Timbuktu, where Maximillian is suddenly a camel, a chatty aardvark named Alec calls her Princess, and a flood is rushing toward a mud mosque.
The real place: Timbuktu
Three things to tell your kid after the story.
- 1Timbuktu is an old city in Mali at the edge of the Sahara Desert, near the Niger River.
- 2Timbuktu's famous mosques are built of mud, with wooden sticks poking out that workers climb on to repair the walls.
- 3Long ago Timbuktu was a great center of learning, and families there still care for very old handwritten books.
