The story
Exaggerata has an outfit for every mood and turns every molehill into a mountain, often with a southern accent and a red fan. While crossing a creek with Oblivibob, she insists the stones are the slipperiest ever, then slips and disappears under one.
She shoots out into a blazing desert in Chad and heads for the shade of strange rock towers. There, a dromedary named Rufus tells her about ancient cave drawings and a legend of a rider called Nomad.
The real place: Ennedi Massif
Three things to tell your kid after the story.
- 1The Ennedi Massif is a group of sandstone mountains in the Sahara Desert in Chad, carved by wind and water into arches, pillars and towers.
- 2Its rock walls hold paintings and carvings thousands of years old, showing people, cattle, horses and camels.
- 3In one deep pool there, the Guelta d'Archei, camels come to drink and a few rare desert crocodiles still live.
