The story

Fibius is a sweet, merry Goop with a tiny whip, but he tells little fibs whenever it suits him. Sent to his room after a fib, he twirls his whip, catches an old toy airplane, and flies right out the window.

The plane drops him in the middle of the Sahara, next to a big-eared fennec fox named Tamba. With deathstalker scorpions and jackals about, Fibius learns that every fib leads them closer to the dreaded black desert.

The real place: The Black Desert, Egypt

Three things to tell your kid after the story.

  1. 1Egypt's Black Desert looks dark because its hills are covered in black volcanic rocks sitting on orange sand.
  2. 2Not far away is the White Desert, full of chalky white rocks that wind has carved into mushroom shapes.
  3. 3Fennec foxes have giant ears that let out body heat to keep them cool and help them hear prey underground.
