The story

Haychu loves rainy days and catching wishes on her umbrella, but when she gets mad she shouts "I hate you!" at everyone. One night she says it to the cabbage on her dinner plate.

The cabbage grows and grows and swallows her whole, then drops her in the forest of dreams and nightmares, where anything she imagines can happen. A yellow-eyed snake named Kaa offers to be her guide, if she can watch her words.

The real place: The Vegetable Garden

Three things to tell your kid after the story.

  1. 1Cabbage, broccoli, kale and Brussels sprouts all come from the same plant family.
  2. 2Cutting an onion releases a gas that makes your eyes sting and water.
  3. 3Red cabbage juice changes color when you add lemon juice or baking soda, so you can use it like a magic potion.
