The story
Shoer loves shoes and tidiness, and he picks a different pair every day for a different adventure. Choosing a dusty pair of chocolate brown boots, he blows on them and disappears in a whirl of sparkles.
He lands in a getabako, a Japanese shoe closet, and can't resist reorganizing it. When he slips on a single wooden geta sandal carved with dragons, a fire breathing dragon appears and spells out a request.
The real place: Japan
Three things to tell your kid after the story.
- 1In Japan, people take off their shoes before going into a home and put them in a shoe cupboard called a getabako.
- 2Geta are traditional wooden sandals that stand on two wooden teeth, which lift your feet up off the ground.
- 3Many Japanese schools have rows of getabako at the entrance, where students switch into indoor shoes.
