The story

Sulkie is a good-natured Goop with a pouch of gold coins, but when he doesn't get his way he sulks for days. When Stinjessie gets the first ride on a magic crescent moon swing, he sits down and sulks.

The swing scoops him up and drops him, covered in paprika, into a bustling market in Morocco. A pair of talking slippers warns that bandits are after his coins, and there are cobras about too.

The real place: A Moroccan Souk

Three things to tell your kid after the story.

  1. 1A souk is a traditional market, and the souks of Marrakesh are a maze of narrow lanes packed with spices, lamps, rugs and slippers.
  2. 2Saffron is one of the most expensive spices in the world, made from tiny threads picked by hand from crocus flowers.
  3. 3Snake charmers sway their pipes, and the cobra follows the movement, a lot like Sulkie's dancing slippers.
