Verivaine and the Hall of Mirrors

The story

Verivaine is a charming Goop who carries a mirror everywhere and can't stop admiring herself. When she gazes into it in the magic forest, she falls right in and lands in a glittering hall full of mirrors.

She is at the Palace of Versailles in France, where a statue named Lise can read her thoughts. Every time Verivaine peeks in a mirror, a jealous statue of Apollo shouts "Off with her head!" and sends his minions after her.

The real place: Palace of Versailles

Three things to tell your kid after the story.

1. 1The Hall of Mirrors at Versailles has 357 mirrors lining its walls.
2. 2King Louis XIV, who built Versailles, was called the Sun King, and Apollo the sun god appears all over the gardens.
3. 3Queen Marie Antoinette had a pretend little farm village built in the gardens, with cottages and real animals.
