The story
Whymusty can't stop asking "Why?" about everything. While helping Carolesse search for her lost bonnet, the two climb high into snowy mountains, and when Whymusty asks a glowing red moon why it is red, its light swallows him up.
He lands beside a turquoise lake in the Canadian Rockies, where a pine marten named Raffles warns him that a cougar gang is on the prowl and they need to get over a mountain peak.
The real place: Canadian Rockies
Three things to tell your kid after the story.
- 1Lake Louise gets its turquoise color from rock flour, tiny bits of ground-up rock washed down from a glacier, just like Raffles explains.
- 2Banff, in the Canadian Rockies, was Canada's very first national park.
- 3Banff has special bridges and tunnels over and under the highway so animals like bears and elk can cross safely.
